Getting there:

Forbes is a five-hour drive from Sydney, seven hours from Melbourne and three hours from Canberra. Trains depart Sydney for Orange, with a connecting bus. Or fly into Parkes and rent a car for the 25min drive.

Here are top 5 things to do in Forbes for a day trip.

1.Gum Swamp & Bird Hide

The highlight of my visit to this town is the beautiful swamp, with its submerged dead trees, where thousands of birds come to nest and make their home.

Gum Swamp has an extraordinary array of water birds to observe and the landscape lends itself to some pretty special photo opportunities, especially around sunrise and sunset. Ensure to take your binoculars or a camera with a good zoom.

The hide with two stories  is strategically placed, offering excellent views while ensuring that the birds’ natural behavior remains undisturbed. It is easily access, about 5-10 minutes’ walk from the car park; It is a very clever idea. As you take the path from the carpark into the reserve area, catch sight of the magnificent goanna sculpture, also known as Gugaa.
