Review tour Uluru 4-day- 3-night tour, things you need to know to choose your perfect tour.

A few years ago, my two girlfriends and I were eager to take a trip to the Australian Outback for the very first time, particularly the Red Centre, renowned for its Aboriginal heritage and breathtaking natural wonders like Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon. We’re excited to immerse ourselves in the wilderness and experience the spiritual significance of these iconic landmarks firsthand.

We bought the 4-day- 3-night tour from Peterpans Brisbane, The tour provider is Wayoutback Australian Sarfaris.

We journeyed from Brisbane to Sydney by plane, then continued from Sydney to Uluru since there weren’t any direct flights from Brisbane to Ayers Rock airport.

Uluru travel itinerary- As a first-time visitor to a desert landscape like the Red Centre, I was struck by the awe-inspiring beauty of Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon. Witnessing the magnificent sunrise and sunset at Uluru added to the magical experience. I also enjoyed camping under the serene night sky. Let’s explore the Uluru travel itinerary with me 🙂

Day 1 of Uluru travel itinerary

Our flight experienced a delay(travel with Qantas), leading to a later arrival than anticipated. After notifying the travel agent, and they assured us that the tour guide would meet us at Ayers Rock airport around 3:30 PM, which meant we would unfortunately miss part of the experience. Keep in mind that if you’re flying with Qantas to Uluru, there’s a chance you could land after your tour has already begun, be sure to communicate with your travel agent to to coordinate your itinerary accordingly.

Later in the day, we began an interpretive walk around the base of Uluru, then proceeded to the Cultural Centre.

After settling in to watch the sunset, we took a group photo, embracing and appreciating the stunning wilderness surrounding us in the middle of nowhere. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the entire group joined the tour guides in preparing dinner, chopping vegetables, and cleaning up. We then gathered around a campfire for dinner.

At night, the temperature dropped quickly. Although the actual temperature was likely between 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, it felt colder since we were sleeping outdoors without the shelter of a tent.  The coldness woke me several times during the night.  Omg, I witnessed the most stunning and clearest sky full of shining stars, I even saw a few shooting stars and made a few wishes.

My friend was lying awake next to me, and I told her to look up at the sky in the stary night

Day 2 of Uluru travel itinerary

Uluru travel itinerary-We were awakened by the tour guide early, around 5 AM, not just by the call but also by the distinct aroma of a campfire that the tour guides had lit to warm up everyone in the cold, we then had a quick breakfast before hitting the road. After fueling up, we set off to catch the breathtaking sunrise over Uluru.

As the first rays of sunlight illuminated the landscape, we journeyed on to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), meaning “many heads” in the Aboriginal language, eager to wander among its 36 imposing domes. The trek through the Valley of the Winds awaited us, promising a thrilling exploration through creek beds and into the untamed heart of the wilderness. The Valley of the Winds walk is a 7.4-kilometre loop, with 2 of the most magnificent outlook points. It was an experience where sturdy hiking boots became invaluable.

After lunch with a yummy salad, we set our sights on Kings Creek Station. Here, beneath the vast expanse of the outback sky on the second night, we would find our rest for the night, marking the end of another day’s journey into Australia’s natural wonders.

Note: the temperature soared to around 35 degrees Celsius during the daytime, even though we visited in September. Despite the time of year, we encountered quite a few flies. It’s advisable to bring a hat with a net to shield yourself from them. I’d recommend avoiding a visit to Uluru during the summer months due to the intense daytime heat and increased fly activity.

Uluru travel itinerary-Embarking on an adventure this morning, we set foot in Watarrka (Kings Canyon) National Park, where a 6km trek along the rim awaits us. Our journey will take us through breathtaking sites, offering numerous opportunities for capturing unforgettable photos and videos.

Post-hike, after enjoying our lunch and taking a moment to rest, our path leads us towards Alice Springs. The day concludes with us checking into your hostel for a restful night.

Upon checking into the hostel, we were to receive meal vouchers for our dinner. After settling in, the group decided to commemorate the day with a drink. However, as we’re not big drinkers, we opted instead to explore Alice Springs. While wandering through town, we had the chance to meet some Aboriginal people showcasing their artwork on the streets. Impressed by their talent, I purchased one piece, while my friends bought two. I wished there were more available, but unfortunately, the artist had run out. Each painting cost only $30, I think we had a great deal.

During our walk around town around 7:30 PM, a man approached us, inquiring if we could assist him by purchasing some alcohol from the bottle shop. We politely declined his request. I don’t recommend walking by yourself too late at night in Alice Springs.

Today, we set off from Alice Springs early, heading back towards Ayers Rock, as we bid adieu to this captivating area. A different driver was at the helm of our bus this time. With some members of our original group staying behind in Alice Springs, we welcomed new faces aboard on the way back.

Given that we still had some time left at Ayers Rock and remembering the missed opportunity due to our flight’s delay, my friends suggested we purchase tickets to visit the iconic Uluru. Anticipating that it might be a while before we return to Central Australia, we agreed. From what I recall, the tickets were about $80 each, so we decided to go for it.

Once there, we explored the surroundings. Even though many visitors were climbing Uluru (this was in September 2019), we learned that such activities would be prohibited starting in December 2019 due to the site’s sacredness to Aboriginal people. I deemed the climb not only unsafe but also felt it important to honor the indigenous cultural practices. Thus, we chose to stay at the base, capturing the moment in photos, while observing others ascend and then make their way back down.

Having a cup of coffee before heading to the airport, bidding farewell to this enchanting place as we head back to Sydney.

Impression of the Urulu tour package-Uluru travel itinerary

  • The experience was fantastic. Both tour guides were knowledgeable and experts in their respective areas. If given the chance to choose the tour again, I would opt for the 3-day 2 2-night option or tour connecting a different mix of places. Day 4 seemed only to involve returning to Ayers Rock to catch our flight. If you have time, planning the trip to include travel to another city /town from Alice Springs would save time on day 4 and is more cost-effective.
  • Most of the travelers on this tour were young backpackers/travelers in their twenties If you’re seeking a tour with a different demographic that better suits your preferences, you can inquire with the travel agent for other options/tours.
  • The tour typically accommodates between 16 to 20 participants, traveling via a minibus, with two tour guides who alternate driving responsibilities throughout the journey.

This tour offers a hands-on experience, where participants actively gather wood for campfires, cook meals alongside guides, and set up their sleeping arrangements. It’s far from a luxurious journey with champagne, a five-course meal, or private accommodations, but if you seek an authentic, rugged adventure in the outback, enjoy camping under the vast expanse of a starlit sky, gather around a campfire, and connect with fellow travelers in a group setting, then this tour is perfect for you.

Tips for travel at the outback:

  • Pack warm clothing and jackets since the temperatures drop significantly at night. Avoid visiting Central Australia during the summer months (October to February) due to extreme heat and flies.
  • Pack some snacks and water
  • Hat, boosts are necessary.
