Fraser Island, also known as K’gari (/ˈɡɑːri/ ) located along the southeastern coast in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia. Situated approximately 250 km (160 mi)Brisbane.

Stretching 122 km in length, Fraser Island holds the distinction of being the largest sand island globally, which is listed as a World Heritage Site .Within its borders, you’ll encounter majestic remnants of towering rainforests flourishing on sand,  pristine lakes, an abundance of diverse wildlife, and breathtaking natural beauty.

Arriving at this stunning island for the first time feels like returning home to me. As I gaze out at the ocean and the stars, surrounded by peaceful serenity, listening to the seagulls, time seems to stand still island.

Day1: BRISBANE – FRAISER ISLAND ( K’gari )

Brisbane – Tewantin, Tewantin ferries, cross to North Shore on to Teewah beach drive north along Cooloola Beach up to Double Island Point Lighhouse Track. Cross to Rainbow Beach, drive up to township if tide is low enough to pass !

We departed from Brisbane, crossed Rainbow beach to Inskip Point to catch ferry over to Fraser. Drive up east coast 75 Mile Beach to Happy Valley Resort for accommodation.

Happy valley  is located  in the middle of  75 Mile Beach, facilitating easy access to various destinations on the island. The unit is approximately a 7-minute stroll from the ocean. While my room doesn’t have a direct view of the ocean, the calming sound of waves crashing sooths me to sleep and greets me upon waking.

Happy Valley accommodation provides a communal kitchen facility, allowing guests to prepare their own meals and mingle with fellow travelers. We took a leisurely walk around Happy Valley and ventured to the beach. The night concluded with a delightful meal of homemade spaghetti.

Day 2 : Eli Creek – SS Maheno shipwreck -Pinnacles – Indian Head – Champagne Pools- Waddy Point

Happy Valley to Eli Creek

Eli Creek, situated on the eastern beach of K’gari ,a short 5 km drive from Happy Valley where we stayed. The Creek  releases up to four million litres of crystal-clear freshwater into the ocean every hour, making it the largest creek on the island. It’s a popular spot for picnics and swimming. When we arrived, there was a considerable number of visitors at the site.

We dedicated approximately 45 mins-1 hour to strolling and floating on the clear water.

Floating down the creek’s flowing water from the bridge at the boardwalk’s far end provided an refreshing sensation. Basking in the sun, feeling its warmth, and letting go of all stress, it felt like a temporary escape from reality.

A must to bring to Eli Creek:

A floatie to really relax and float down the creek.

Eli Creek- Maheno shipwreck

(24 min (7.9 km) via Fraser Island Beach Track- also known as 75 Mile Beach). Accessible solely by 4WD, just like the rest of Fraser Island.

Maheno shipwreck

The Maheno represents an important part of Australian history and is an essential sight for anyone exploring K’gari. Over time, the island’s waters have been the final destination for numerous ships lost at sea. Among these maritime casualties, the SS Maheno shipwreck stands out as the most renowned. What we see today as a rustic wreck was once the formidable SS Maheno, a vessel with a long history of service.

SS Maheno- The pinnacles (3 km)

The Pinacles serve as a testament to the evolution and development of Fraser Island, encapsulating the rich history of the island’s indigenous inhabitants.

For the Butchulla people, the original custodians of K’gari (Fraser Island), this sacred site holds profound importance.

The formation of the Pinnacles resulted from the accumulation of minerals within the sand dunes. This process is believed to have occurred over hundreds of thousands of years ago. A combination of clay, minerals, and sand led to the creation of the distinctive cliffs, with the coloration attributed to the presence of iron-rich minerals in the sand. Over time, the sculptural shapes of the cliffs were shaped by weathering, as wind and rain gradually eroded the outer layers of sand, revealing the ancient core beneath.

The pinnacles- Indian Head Lookout

Indian Head Lookout stands as a readily accessible landmark on K’gari (Fraser Island). Simply follow 75 Mile Beach north until you reach the headland, where you’ll find the lookout situated at the northern end of the Sand Highway on K’gari’s east coast.

You may also have the chance to spot humpback whales between July and November

The Champagne Pools

Immerse yourself in the mesmerizing natural Jacuzzi of the Champagne Pools, where the pristine waters merge with the bubbling and frothing waves of the sea.

The Champagne Pools consist of a collection of pools shaped by volcanic rocks. Positioned between Indian Head and Waddy Point, these pools adorn the stretch of 75 Mile Beach- an unmissable experience on the island.

An additional remarkable aspect of the Champagne Pools is that they serve as the sole safe swimming spot in the ocean on K’gari.  It can be dangerous to swim as its home to lots of shark and stingray, and  the island is renowned for its hazardous and rough sea condition with  strong riptide.

The Champagne Pools stand out as the only permitted saltwater swimming spot on Fraser Island. Enhanced by the volcanic rock break wall, these pools have gained popularity as inviting swimming spots. When the ocean waves roll over the rocks and trickle into the shallow sandy-bottomed areas, they create small bubbles and frothy foam, reminiscent of the effervescence found in a glass of champagne.

Things to do

  • The Champagne Pools offer a protective barrier from the ocean, allowing visitors to enjoy a refreshing dip in the saltwater safely. During low tide, the pools become exceptionally tranquil, providing an ideal setting to immerse oneself in the saltwater and relish the soothing sounds of the ocean.
  • Go for a walk
  • Spotting whales: especially from mid-July to early November, which marks their migration period, there’s a chance you may be fortunate enough to spot whales.

Note:

Ensuring safety is crucial when visiting the Champagne Pools to guarantee a memorable and accident-free visit. Here are essential safety guidelines to remember:

      • Stay close: Due to the strong currents in this area, it’s advisable to avoid venturing too far from the pools. Even proficient swimmers may struggle to navigate the intense currents.
      • Mind the rocks: While the surrounding rocks offer protection, they can also pose risks of cuts and abrasions if not approached with caution. It’s best to avoid swimming directly around the rocks to minimize the chance of injury.

Campgrounds typically fill up during school holidays.

At night, we decided drive out to the beach , put out our chairs, have a hot drink and enjoy the beautiful star sky, look out the ocean for couple hours. There was a group of 4 of us.

This moment on Fraser Island felt like the highlight of our trip, where worries melted away and I immersed myself in the beauty of the surroundings. The island felt like a familiar place, allowing me to connect with myself and the natural world around me like never before. The soothing sounds of seagulls and crashing waves added to the enchantment of the moment, as if nature itself was embracing and comforting me.

A dingo approached us. My friend swiftly used a light to deter it, causing the dingo to retreat. It’s important to note that it’s best to avoid solo outings at night and to exercise caution when traveling with children due to the presence of dingoes on the island. Forest on the sand- Discover K’gari (Fraser) island: A fun 4-Day, 3-Night Adventure

A short boardwalk guides us through the picturesque K’gari rainforest alongside Wanggoolba Creek. You can see  numerous towering trees known as Fraser Island satinays, also known as Syncarpia hillii. Some of these ancient trees surpass 1000 years in age, with their towering canopies stretching up to 50 meters high.

History:

While Central Station is a part of the broader Pile Valley rainforest area, its significance lies in its rich history. Once a bustling community for loggers on the island, Central Station stands as a testament to K’gari’s past. Logging was a prominent industry on K’gari, with the first timber harvested in 1863. By the early 1900s, a wave of mainland Australians migrated to K’gari to engage in logging activities.

From the 1920s to the 1950s, Central Station flourished as the primary settlement for loggers and their families.

However, as K’gari gained recognition as a World Heritage Site and national park in the late 1900s, logging activities ceased, officially ending in 1991.

Lots of history and a beautiful rainforest with boardwalk track allowing to fully appreciate the forest.

It’s advisable to keep a close watch on small children and ensure that all food is securely stored to avoid attracting dingoes, goannas, or other wildlife.

Camping area:

The camping area is situated 8.6 kilometers from the Eurong township along Eurong Road, 9.4 kilometers from the Wanggoolba Creek barge landing on Wanggoolba Road, and a mere 800 meters from the Central Station day-use area.

The camping area is securely fenced for Dingo safety and nestled within the rainforest. It features designated areas for both tents and trailers, as well as a separate section for walkers to camp, located at the western end of the main camping area. Facilities provided include coin-operated hot showers, flushing toilets, wheelchair access, and washing-up facilities.

Lake Mckenzie (Boorangoora)

Lake Mckenzie (Boorangoora)- Discover K’gari (Fraser) island: A fun 4-Day, 3-Night Adventure

Lake McKenzie is undeniably one of the most enchanting and renowned destinations on Fraser Island, cherished by both locals and tourists alike. Its allure is not only attributed to the mesmerizing clear blue and green hues of the water but also to the soft, pristine white sand that surrounds it.

During our visit in March, despite the water still being cool , the overcast skies unfortunately obscured the lake’s full splendor. For the optimal experience, it’s recommended to visit Lake McKenzie either at sunrise or sunset, as the soft, diffused light during these times accentuates the vivid blues and greens of the water, revealing its true majesty.

Spend a morning in Lake MC Kenzie – King fisher Bay Resort  for lunch

Kingfisher Bay Resort offers a variety of amenities, including hotel accommodations, tours, restaurants, bars, and bistros. During our visit, we had the opportunity to drive around and enjoy a delicious lunch at their restaurant before continuing our journey back to Happy Valley via Eurong.
