1.Dubbo Observatory

For my friend’s birthday, we visited the Dubbo Observatory for a Night Sky & Telescope Viewing Session, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. The evening began with a short but fascinating slideshow presentation by local astronomer Peter Starr, where we learned about the solar system, planets, and the sun. This set the perfect stage for what was to come.

As the sky darkened, the real magic began. The clear, moonless night made it ideal for stargazing. With about a dozen telescopes of varying sizes set up, we were able to view a range of stars, nebulae, and planets. Jupiter and Saturn were particularly stunning, and we even glimpsed the distant Neptune along with other star systems. We were guided through the wonders of the night sky, using a laser pointer to highlight specific constellations and celestial objects. For those with compatible DSLR cameras, there was even the opportunity to capture photos of colorful nebulae through the telescopes. It was a fascinating evening that I’d highly recommend to anyone interested in astronomy.

The RFDS service is an incredible place to learn about this iconic Australian organization that supports countless families in rural areas. The volunteers were both knowledgeable and helpful, making the experience even better.  I am lucky to have a friend who work here who show me around the centre. We spent about two hours at the Centre. This is an amazing new museum that revealed so much I didn’t know about the RFDS. I especially loved the 3D experiences using iPads and hearing personal stories.   A bit of RFDS history, on 15 May 1928, John Flynn’s vision came to life with the launch of the Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service in Cloncurry, Queensland, which would later be known as the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Starting with its first flight in a single-engine, fabric-covered biplane, the RFDS gradually expanded in size, services, and its ability to reach more areas. In case you didn’t know, John Flynn’s image appears on the Australian $20 note.

My friend works at RFDS, so he can invite family and friends to check out the real plane behind the scenes. I snapped a few pictures of it while I was there.

I lived in Dubbo for more than a year, and it wasn’t until recently that I finally had the chance to visit the historic Dundullimal Homestead. Dundullimal, meaning “thunderstorm” or “hailstorm” in the local Aboriginal language .

If you’re looking to step back in time and experience Australia’s rural history firsthand, this place is an absolute must. Set on 4 hectares of park-like grounds, the homestead is the oldest surviving slab hut house in Australia, and its historic charm is undeniable. It was built around 1840 as the head station for a 6,500-hectare squatting run. The experience is made even more special by the amazing volunteers who welcome me with warmth and passion, sharing the history of the homestead with such pride. It’s so refreshing to see these historic landmarks untouched by vandalism.
