Last updated on February 28th, 2025 at 08:32 am

Loneliness is different from being alone. Being alone is a physical state of not being with others, which can be a choice and often provides a sense of peace and self-reflection. In contrast, loneliness is an emotional state where a person feels isolated or disconnected, regardless of whether they are physically alone or in a crowd. Loneliness can be distressing and lead to feelings of sadness and emptiness, while being alone can be fulfilling and rejuvenating when it is desired.

Solitude and the Single Life: Navigating Loneliness Without a Romantic Partner

People who are single, have no partner or children/ family, or live alone tend to experience loneliness more often than those with a partner or family? Could be? But they are not the only ones who face loneliness.

For those of us who are single or living alone, daily life can often feel like it’s stuck on repeat:

Day 1: Go to work, pay bills, go home, cook, clean, shower, sleep.

Day 2: Go to work, pay bills, go home, cook, clean, shower, sleep.

Day n: Go to work, pay bills, go home, cook, clean, shower, sleep….

It’s a routine that’s comfortable, yet sometimes we find ourselves questioning the purpose of it all. We might catch up with friends or visit family in our free time, but as soon as we walk back through our door, loneliness often greets us like an unwelcome guest.

When night falls, we often find ourselves most alone within four big walls. Those dinners alone, hastily preparing a boring chicken sandwich or slurping spicy Korean instant noodles. Missing the chatter of a companion, the sound of another’s laughter, or the simple comfort of knowing someone is there. Special moments of celebration or achievement feel empty with no one to share them.

We try to escape the loneliness. We turn to social media, scrolling through feeds filled, hoping to feel less alone. But the more we scroll, the emptier we feel.

Then there are the dating apps, we swipe left, we swipe right, hoping for a match that will fill the void. Sometimes we find it, a spark in the darkness. More often, it’s just more alone, more frustration.

Moreover, established circles of friends might drift apart due to changing life circumstances. As people move, change jobs, start families, or encounter new responsibilities, they may no longer have the time to spend with us.
