The Maheno represents an important part of Australian history and is an essential sight for anyone exploring K’gari. Over time, the island’s waters have been the final destination for numerous ships lost at sea. Among these maritime casualties, the SS Maheno shipwreck stands out as the most renowned. What we see today as a rustic wreck was once the formidable SS Maheno, a vessel with a long history of service.

History of Maheno:Built in Scotland in 1905 for New Zealand’s steamship company, the SS Maheno was initially utilized for passenger transport between Auckland and Sydney. In Maori, the indigenous language of New Zealand, “Maheno” translates to “island.” During World War I, the SS Maheno also served a vital role as a hospital ship. Following the war’s conclusion, the Maheno resumed its commercial service until 1935.The Maheno’s operational life concluded upon its sale to a Japanese shipbreaker. While en route from Sydney to Osaka, Japan, towed by the Oonah, a former Tasmanian ferry, the Maheno encountered a severe cyclone off the coast of Queensland on July 7 1935. Despite attempts to reattach the towline, it snapped, causing the Maheno to drift away and eventually wash ashore on Fraser Island’s 75 Mile Beach.Efforts to salvage the ship proved unsuccessful, and despite being put up for sale, the Maheno was ultimately abandoned due to lack of buyer interest. Fraser Island 75mile beach thus became the final resting place for the Maheno.

Positioned between Indian Head and Waddy Point, these pools adorn the stretch of 75 Mile Beach- an unmissable experience on the island.

An additional remarkable aspect of the Champagne Pools is that they serve as the sole safe swimming spot in the ocean on K’gari. It can be dangerous to swim as its home to lots of shark and stingray, and the island is renowned for its hazardous and rough sea condition with strong riptide. The Champagne Pools stand out as the only permitted saltwater swimming spot on Fraser Island. Enhanced by the volcanic rock break wall, these pools have gained popularity as inviting swimming spots. When the ocean waves roll over the rocks and trickle into the shallow sandy-bottomed areas, they create small bubbles and frothy foam, reminiscent of the fizziness found in a glass of champagne.Things to do
